Post Graduate Department of Zoology

Department of Zoology came into existence in 2001 with the introduction of Graduate Programme in Zoology (BSc) at a sanctioned strength of 24, with complementary courses in Botany and Chemistry, under the leadership of Prof. K. J. Lilly. In the year 2013, the Department was upgraded to Post Graduate Department and the Master’s Programme in Zoology with specialization in Fishery Science commenced. The sanctioned strength of the Masters Programme is 12. The department offers an Open Course on Public Health and Nutrition for the students from other discipline and a Complementary Programme in Zoology at UG level. The department also offers Value Added Courses- one in Mushroom Cultivation and another in Ornamental Fish Culture and Aquarium Management.

Department has good infrastructural facilities in the form of well-equipped laboratories, IT enabled class rooms and computer lab with internet facility. The department Museum provide a unique learning experience for the students. The department holds a wide array of reference books in the department library. The central library of the college also holds a good collection of books and journals of biological science.

To foster the talents and competency of students, the department regularly organizes Power point presentations, quiz competitions, biodiversity surveys, field studies, observation of important days, celebration of festivals etc. under the umbrella of Zoology Association. The department is regularly organizing an All Kerala Intercollegiate Zoo Fest, ‘Emerald Quest’ since 2012. Department maintains a vermicomposting unit, butterfly garden, mushroom culture unit, apiculture unit and wet-lab facility.  

The department completed 20 years of glorious service maintaining excellent records in its way with hundred percent results and ranks at university level. Recent additions to the academic achievements are the 8th rank for BSc Zoology of M.G. University 2020 by Athul K. Soman and 1st and 4th ranks for MSc Zoology of M.G. University 2021 by Alfred George and Honeymol Benny respectively.

To promote research culture and to achieve the goal to become a research department of high reputation, the department regularly organizes national and international webinars, seminars, invited talks and interactions with eminent biologists. Faculty members and students of the department have published a number of research articles in reputed national and international journals.
