The Department of Commerce came into existence in the year  1981,  when the institution was a Junior College.  B.Com course was added in the year 1995 and became the first Post Graduate Department of the college in the year 1998 with the sanction of M Com course. Later in 2009, the Department was upgraded to the status of  Research Centre in Commerce affiliated to M.G. University.  The Centre is extending  Data Analysis services to home and external scholars.  Till date, 26 Ph.D degrees have been awarded  through this centre. The Department has been maintaining excellent academic records since its very inception. It has had landmark achievements from 2001 onwards with hundred per cent result  and ranks at University level. The academic performance of the P. G. (M Com) students are also commendable. In the latest result, we secured 10th position in B Com programme of M. G. University.  A majority of our alumnae are well placed around the world or are pursuing higher education in prestigious institutions. The students of our Department excel in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities with many achievements in inter-collegiate competitions for various years. The  department maintains an excellent library with around 3000 books for students and faculty and also extends e-library services.  Various curricular and extra-curricular activities are conducted by the department and have secured several prizes in inter-collegiate competitions over the years. The department offers  three value added courses on Tally Prime, Micro Soft Excel and Mendeley & SPSS .

The department  organises three competitions every year,  “Commerce Colloquy” – a State level Intercollegiate competition for Commerce students since 2002, “ Junior Colloquy” for Higher Secondary students from 2008 and a research oriented national level  “Paper Presentation Competition” from 2014.  To  promote academic excellence of students and  faculty, the  department regularly  organises  seminars on various topics and other academic programmes. The Department  subscribes  to 17 Journals which are accessible to students, research scholars and faculty.  

Business Innovation and Incubation  Centre  of  Mahatma Gandhi University selected one of the Research Projects  of  the department for Ph D Start ups under the “From Lab to Industry [FLI] Programme 2018.  This is the only non-Science project in this category funded by the Incubation Centre of  M. G. University. This  programme  aims  to introduce  a  Consultancy Service  for building   financial capability among  college level youth and  among  the local community of  the college
