The meeting decided to conduct various programmes for the current year. The details and supporting documents are enlisted.

‘ACADEMIC SEMINARS AND TRAINING SESSIONS
To boost up the academic interest among the students two sessions on subject related topics were arranged. The sessions were handled by the experts in the concerned fields.
An easy pathway to Quantum Mechanics– Dr. Ignatious
Abraham, Sacred Heart College Thevara on 3rd September 2016.
An Introduction to Solid State Chemistry– Prof. Subin Joseph, S.B.College, Changanacherry on7th September 2016.
In order to help the students to gain maximum knowledge from the classroom itself, the association set up a library facility within the class room. The library is fully fledged with standard books which can satisfy the thirst of knowledge. Dr. Sherly Kurian Inaugurated the library on 15th December 2016.
To nurture values among the students a session on value based education was arranged. Dr. Mercyamma Francis HOD, Chemistry Govt.College Nattakam led the session.
To develop research aptitude among students the association arranged a one day seminar and an interactive session on the topic “Marine Biology and Research in Southern Ocean” on 15th December 2016 with an expert Dr.P.J Antony,(St.Michael’s College.Cherthala) who is having immense experience in exploring the possibilities of interdisciplinary research in marine field. He is the senior research fellow at Centre of Advanced Studies in Marine Biology of Annamalai University. He discussed about the wide variety of plant and animal species found in Antartic Ocean and told the effects of environmental changes on aquatic creatures. He also spoke about his participation in “Southern Ocean Expedition 2009 to Antartica” in an onboard Russian Resaerch Vessel Akademik Boris Petrov for 63 days. The photos of samples collected during the expedition was also shown to audience.
Three Students of Final year Chemistry of our Department got a training at Govt. College Nattokam on December 2016. They trained to analyse water quality tests like COD, BOD, TDS, Sulphate, Chloride,E_Coli etc
Students of chemistry department Shari S Nair, Sujitha Babu and Megha Mary Mathew led the practical session of D2 Zoology students on August 2016. The introductory session to organic chemistry practicals were being carried out by these students under the guidance of Prof. Vinitha Varkey. Peer teaching helps to develop teaching quality in students at a young age and it also develop confidence to present a topic infront of an audience.
Chemistry association organized a two day workshop on “Innovative Practices in Water Resource Management” on 02-02-2017 and 03-02-2017. This programme was cosponsored by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment(KSCSTE). The function was inaugurated by Sri.Oommen Chandy (Former Chief Minister & MLA, Puthupally).
Dr. E. Shaji, Dept. of Geology, University of Kerala handled a session on” Innovative Practices in Water Resource Management” on 2nd February 2017.
Dr. George Abe, the Senior Scientist, Centre for Water resources development and Management (CWRDM), presented a talk on ‘Current Issues of Water Resource Management on 02-02-2017’.
Chemistry association of K.G College proudly conducted an intercollegiate paper presentation competition which was Co-sponsored by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment on 3rd February 2017. Teams from several colleges participated in this competition. The judges of this competition were Dr. Unnikrishnan N (HOD of Zoology, SVRNSS,Vazhoor) and Dr .Daisy Joseph (Former Faculty of Chemistry, Baselius College Kottayam). Each of the teams presented innovative and relevant topics like ecotricity, solar energy etc. The winners of the competition were Baselius College Kottayam, Alphonsa College Pala and Assumption College Changanassery. In the Higher Secondary level competition team from BMM Higher Secondary School were the winners. Principal Dr. Sherly Kurian distributed Certificates and Cash Prizes to the Winners of the competition.
An Eco friendly and Economic method in Qualitative Analysis was implemented in Practicals. Last year a Practical session and workshop were organised to initiate the Practice by Dr. Murukhan, Hindu College Nagarcoil. This year a power point presentation was arranged to familiarize the students of first year.
The Association conducted the release of the Department Magazine ‘CATALYST’ on 22nd February 2017. Principal Dr. Sherly Kurian released the annual review. This magazine is purely science based and holds so many articles of several reputed academicians. This helped the students to develop their academic writing skills and can be used as a manual for carrying out their project works.
.B. ACADEMIC VISITS
Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) situated at Velloor, Kottayam is an institute which conduct extensive and authentic research programmes on environmental issues of Kerala and also seek ecological solutions for issues with wild life conservation, forest management and lot more. Students of Chemistry Department visited the institute as a part of the institute’s “Enjoy Learning Programme on November 2016.
The staff and final year students of Chemistry Department made a visit to Regional Chemical Examiners Laboratory in Kochi on 27th January 2017. This institute which works under Home Department and helps to serve Criminal Justice Administrative System. It was established in the year 1989.
The final year students as well as teaching staffs of chemistry department conducted a trip to marayur and nearby places on 27-01-2017 and 28-01-2017. .
With the aim of benefitting the knowledge gained by the students to the public the association in support with the department started a water quality analysis unit.
The trained students of Water Analysis have done a Project to know the Pollution of various Rivers of Kottayam District including Meenachil and Pampa at Govt.College Natakam. They presented the report which is highly informative.
Three of our students have done a project on Toddy Adulteration at CHEMICAL EXAMINERS LAB, Kakkanad on November 2016 and presented the report.
Three of our students have done a project to know the Dry Rubber Content(DRC) of Rubber Latex of various areas in and around Kottayam at RUBCO Kottayam on December 2016. It was observed that the DRC content varies with area.
Dr. Sherly Kurian, Principal inaugurated the fully furnished Beauty Therapy Lab on 16th January 2017.
The Chemistry Association in co-operation with Aditya -Birla Group, DDRC SRL Diagnostic Services, conducted Free Blood Checkup and BMI determination Camp at the K.G College campus on 31st January 2017. Tests for random plasma glucose, blood pressure and body mass index of interested staff and students were done and results were provided to them.
Chemistry Association in association with Adithya Birla Group and DDRC organised a free medical camp at Abhaya Bhavan, a Home for aged persons at Pothenpuram, Pampady on 31st January 2017. Around fifty persons were attended and all the above mentioned tests were done for the members of the Abhaya Bhavan.
Students of Chemistry Department prepared the SSLC Model Question Papers of Chemistry for the new revised syllabus and distributed among the students of MGM High School Pampady and Ponkunnam Varkey Memorial Govt. Higher Secondary School Alampally on February 2017. Head Mistress Smt. Elizabeth of MGM School and Head Master Sri.Jose of Govt School Alampally accepted the Model Question Papers.
This was another important programme organised by Department of Chemistry. It is a fitness dance programme created by the Columbian dancer and Choreographer Alberto Perez during 1990s.It is a mix of dance and Aerobics.
A Scholarship was Constituted by the Chemistry Alumni In memory of the former student of the Department Meri Achu Joseph.
Entrepreneurship Development Club, started its functioning at K.G College on 15-12-2016 and was organized by chemistry association. The activities of the club was inaugurated by Sri.C.S Ashok Kumar (Retired Deputy Registrar of Industries). This club aims to create the confidence in students to start up a new business of their own.
As an initial activity of this club, Ms. Athira Santhosh (D3 chemistry student) demonstrated the making of soap to the audience. Trade name of the the Soap is “Pearl” . It is widely accepted across the campus due to high TFM content.
Inorder to make students aware of the possibilities of the branch chemistry and to guide them in the right path on 22nd February 2017, the Association organised a Motivational talk on the Topic ‘A JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILES BEGINS WITH A SINGLE STEP’ by Dr.Jimy Ponnanakunnel , R & D Process Development Chemist, Senn Chemicals,Switzerland.
Gopika H Kaimal of final year Chemistry selected to the Rakendhu music event organised by various organisations of Kottayam on 14th January 2017. In the event she got a chance to interact with the famous Director and Musician Sri Sreekumaran Thambi.
NCC Under Officer, Gopika H Kaimal of the Department attended the National Integration Camp of NCC at Indore, Madhya Pradesh from 2016 November 5 to 15. She was selected as the senior officer of the Kerala Lakshadweep Directorate.
Gopika H Kaimal of our Department participated in the debate competition organised by Indian Express and selected as the Best Debator. The article was published in Indian Express on 5th October 2016.
We are proud for the selection of Gopika H Kaimal and Angel Mathew of the Final year BSc as English Trainers by ASAP Campus Selection on 27th February 2017.
Gopika H Kaimal ,Sethalakshmi and Angel Mathews of final year Chemistry participated in various items of University Youth Festival.
Final year students of chemistry association, Gopika H Kaimal and Megha Mary Mathew represented K.G College at the intercollegiate quiz competition organized by Alphonsa College Pala on 13-01-2017. Teams from almost 30 colleges participated in the competition and the students of K.G College secured good scores.
The first year students of chemistry department were welcomed during fresher’s day celebration of Chemistry Association. Several games and tasks were performed by D1 students. It helped to allay fears among juniors and develop friendship among seniors and juniors. The senior students performed cultural shows for welcoming the fresh batch students
A music session was performed by Sri, C S Asok Kumar, Pampady Music club member on 15th December 2016.
34 Pearl Soap distribution-Flash Mob
The students of chemistry department presented a flash mob before the college campus to introduce the product ‘Pearl Soap’. Dr. Sherly Kurian launched the product before the college community on 23rd January 2017. Pearl Soap got great acceptance from all staff and students
The students of our Department celebrated Christmas and the Department distributed a scholarship for a student on 22nd December 2017.
The Alumni Meet of Chemistry Association took place on 14-01-2017.
This was an occasion of happiness where friends meet and renew their friendship. The function was inaugurated by the Pampady Gramapanchayath President Sri. Mathachen Pampady. Prof. Annamma Varghese delivered a motivational talk on career development. The members of alumni meet decided to raise a charity fund in the name of late Ms. Meri Achu Joseph, a former student of K.G College. Several entertainment programmes were conducted by students of the department. Sri Jeffy C John was selected as the Alumni Secretary and Ms. Jinu Maria as the Vice President.
The Alumni meet constituted a Gulf Alumni forum and Jithin P Varghese, Was selected as the Secretary of the Gulf Alumni Chapter. The Association is very happy to see that more than 10 students are members.
The Department Presented a Flash Mob after the successful completion of the Zumba Practice on the Carnival day, 9th February 2017. It was marvellous and beautiful show by the Zumba team.
There was a Games Stall’ AVENTURA’ with variety of entertainment items by the Department on the Carnival day.
In memory of the great Scientists of Chemistry the Association provided a Scientist corner by placing their Photos on October 2016.
41.Farewell to Prof. Abu Joseph
The Association gave a Farewell to Prof. Abu Joseph, Assistant Professor, Dept of Physical Education who has been joined at Baselius College Kottayam on 15th December 2016.
The department conducted a general quiz competition on 20th Jan 2017. Sneha Susan Sunny of final chemistry and Elbee Maria Cyril of Second year bagged the first and second prizes respectively.
